Video Website all about WordPress

I’ve found a great resource for you in the WordPress arena, it’s called WordPress.tv and they have loads and loads of detailed videos all about using WordPress.

I am a converted user of WordPress because it is so damn fast to build a website and get it found by loads of folks looking for the type of content you write about or deliver in many different ways. This WordPress.tv website is just the help some people are looking for to show them how to do the things they see on other websites using the WordPress platform, I’ve just read somewhere that WordPress 3.1 is being downloaded at a rate of about 4 downloads / second!

As you can see hopefully, from the video I’ve placed above, you can embed these videos directly into your own website to help your visitors better understand the discussion you are presenting or if you want to show them easily how-to do a specific thing with WordPress.

This is more or less the same as copying a video from YouTube and embedding it in your website, but with a little different sharing choices.

This video website will be extremely useful for those who are just starting out with WordPress and also those more familiar with it too.

Take a look for yourself, you may be pleasantly surprised by what you find there!

7thDwarf is Back Online

7thDwarf  Gold is now back from the depths of obscurity as we have had to move to a new hosting service and get everything all working again, ugh!

Well, it hasn’t all been fun but it has been games. The transfer to the new server was pretty smooth, as it should be by backing up all my files and then saving them to my computer. Then setting up a new Host and transferring the files by FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to the new host along with the database backup that I have created and sent to my email account on a daily basis.

Sounds all very straightforward and it was, then I clicked my bookmark to open the Admin screen of the blog and NOTHING! Nothing but a page stating that there is no index page or home page or something like that. What! All my files are there, I just saw them on the server and all the links in the configuration file are now pointing to the new server and the database has been checked and rechecked and and and, aahhhhh!

Well then, I must not have something linking properly, what could it be? I know, go check the domain manager and make sure that the DNS  changes (A DNS change allows you to change your Domain Name Server settings for your Domain Names) have been saved and are valid.

Yup! Now open up a chat with support, (They are really great!)  now explain what has been done by me and what I expect to see and what I do actually see.

So, Support go through all the details from my explanation and can see nothing out of the ordinary, it must be that the DNS changes haven’t taken effect yet. Support suggest that I wait until the changes have been given enough time, anywhere from 24 to 72 hours, great!

Wait… Wait… Wait…

72 hours plus and no 7thDwarf blog what the??

Get back in touch with Support! (really good service, I mean it) Tell them what I’ve been doing as far as making changes to the files to get something to happen, and they take a look at how I’ve got the domain pointing manager setup and BINGO!

Yes, IT WAS ME, I did it!

Now we are back online, we need to get a few more links working with some of the internal website functions like email and others so please know that this all getting done in the background and will be all sorted out by the end of the week, hopefully.

In the meantime, if you’ve left a comment and cannot see it or anything else looks wrong  on the site please let me know and I’ll get it put right as fast as possible, thanks.

I’ve got some new downloads and some cool websites I want to tell you about over the coming days and weeks, so stay tuned and I’ll get it all posted as fast as I can.

New for Twitter Users-Paper.li

Good news for you if you are a Twitter user and would like to keep a digest of your Tweets!
Enter – Paper.li, a new website that will create a newspaper type digest of all your tweets and display them in your own pages, plus it adds all the tweets  from your friends that you follow. All for FREE!

The “Paper” is divided into sections with each section showing tweets from relevant topics.

You can easily add your Twitter account to feed into the paper and it works like this;

Twitter User Account-

“The newspaper will be created using all the links (articles) shared in the past 24 hours by the selected Twitter account (curator) AND the people being followed by that user (contributors)”
or you could use a #tag;

Twitter #tag

“The newspaper will be created using all the links (articles) shared in the past 24 hours by all Twitter users that have associated the selected #tag”
and you can also choose to use lists like this;

Twitter @list

“The newspaper will be created using all the links (articles) shared in the past 24 hours by all Twitter users on the selected list”

You can create more focused papers with the Custom Paper button.

“You can query Twitter with a more complex search term than just a #tag (e.g. find all the tweets that talk about climate AND carbon but NOT solar = climate carbon -solar).You can also restrict the Twitter users that can contribute content to the paper by specifying a Twitter list.”

I think that this website will take-off in a big way when more people get to hear about it, especially the users of Twitter, not only that though, the company behind Paper.li – ‘SmallRivers’ is also working on a way to link Facebook into the paper and use your Facebook postings to do the same thing!

We will see what happens, in the meantime if you are a Twitter user and would like to have another link to your blog or website, you could take about 5 minutes and set this up and then tell everyone about it.

Odiogo will read it

If you are a regular reader of this site then you will probably have noticed that I’ve added the new ODIOGO Button to the posts, so when you go to read the articles from now on, you will have the option to ‘just listen’ instead.

Odiogo have created a really cool add-on for your blog that just plugs right in and goes to work right away converting all your written text to audio as an mp3 file that you can just click on the button or download from a few different hosts to make it easy to get any articles you may have missed or wish to listen to later.

When all your posts or articles have been converted, they will then be stored for you by Odiogo (pronounced – audio go ) in a RSS feed that anyone can then access and download the mp3 files to their favourite mp3 player like iTunes or Juice, Zune and also Feed readers like Google, myYahoo, myMSN, myAOL, netvibes or newsgator.

All you need to have is a WordPress blog and you’re good to go, just click on over to Odiogo’s website and sign-up for an account which is free and only takes a minute to get one. Once you’ve got the Odiogo Feed ID, you just need to get the plug-in from their plug-in page and upload it to your WordPress plugin folder.

When you have it in your plugin folder, just activate it and then take a look in your Settings panel on the left side of your admin dashboard and click the “Odiogo Listen Button” link and you’ll find the simple settings that need to be done.

  • Your Odiogo Feed ID: This is the ID number you signed-up for previously, just enter it here.
  • Odiogo Update Service: Notify Odiogo servers when you write a new post (It’s highly recommended to enable this option for faster availability of the audio files of your site)
  • Safe Include: Enable safe include for custom WordPress template (It’s important to enable this option if you’re using a custom WordPress template which does not call wp_head or wp_footer. If unsure leave this option enabled.)
That’s it!
All you need to do now is give it about an hour and you will have all your posts or articles converted to mp3’s which can then be listened to on your site and downloaded from a number of different hosts, how cool is that and you didn’t even have to speak one word of it.
